» About Us
For those in need, St. Matthew's House is the only
housing facility and food ministry for
the homeless and hungry of Naples.
Our commitment is more than housing for one night. SMH
offers compassion, caring,
support, counseling and education for homeless and low-income families
who want to
improve their lives and become self-supporting members of society.
Our goal is to identify and address the problems that
led to homelessness. We also
provide assistance for neighbors in need to prevent them from becoming
homeless.
We believe it is crucial and far more effective to keep a family in
their home.
In the 18 years since our inception, St. Matthew's House
has grown from a one-house
shelter for men to a 120 bed multi-housing facility for men, women and
women with
children and infants. Each year, we see our beds filled with those who
would otherwise
be homeless, have no safe place to sleep and no food to eat.
In 2003, St. Matthew's House completed construction of
the Wolfe Apartments, transitional
affordable housing units in Golden Gate. We are always trying
to develop opportunities for self sufficiency. To that effect,
in 2003 a large thrift store on Airport Road South was completed.
A second thrift store in Bonita Springs on Bernwood Drive opened
its doors in 2005 and both stores were named St.
Matthew's House of Treasures. Also in 2005, an effort that
grew out of our experienced food service management, SMH
Catering was established and has brought job training for
residents and support funds to St. Matthew's House.
SMH depends mainly on private donations for its
operations. It is through the
support and generosity of our community that we are able to serve
the very
poor and often hopeless among us.
